Andrew Stocks: Turning Challenges into Opportunities with Vision and Grit!
When most entrepreneurs would have given up, Andrew Stocks found opportunity. As the founder and CEO of Sunshine International, he has guided his company through periods of growth, economic downturns, and a global pandemic. Known for his tenacity, strategic marketing, and unique approach to business, Andrew has transformed Sunshine International into one of the most successful property and retirement service companies in Thailand.
In this exclusive interview, Andrew shares the insights that have shaped his success, the challenges he’s faced along the way, and what keeps him motivated. His story is one of resilience, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of growth.
Business Innovation: Mr. Stocks, firstly may I take the time to congratulate you on the award that you have just won, and secondly, I would like to thank you for allowing me to interview you.
Andrew Stocks: Thank you very much! It’s an honor to be here, and I appreciate the opportunity to speak with you today.
Business Innovation: I have been following you and your company for around 10 years now, and I am quite astonished by how, over the last five years, your company has grown consistently. Could you share what you think has been the key to this rapid growth?
Andrew Stocks: One of the key reasons for our growth is the fact that I personally oversee the company’s marketing efforts. We invest heavily in research, and we focus on running the right campaign at the right time in the right country. We rely on data from the news, keep an eye on global economies, and adjust our marketing strategies based on economic conditions. For example, during recessions, we highlight how affordable life in Thailand is, and during boom times, we emphasize the luxury of living here and the high quality of life. It’s all about timing and understanding what people need at different moments in the economic cycle.
Business Innovation: Do you find it difficult as a foreigner to lead your company and drive it forward?
Andrew Stocks: It’s not always easy. I come from a very organized family background and things are more relaxed here in Thailand. The way business is conducted can sometimes feel less structured, and communication issues can arise. However, I am a man who believes in getting things done as quickly as possible, and that’s where the frustration often comes in—mainly when things get delayed or put off. It’s challenging for me, but what’s more important is that my customers feel frustrated too, and that’s when I start to feel it. Despite these challenges, I can handle it.
Business Innovation: Many businesses struggled during the Covid-19 pandemic, and some even closed for good. How did you navigate that stress and keep your company afloat during that difficult time?
Andrew Stocks: The Covid-19 pandemic was incredibly stressful. We had no income for nearly three years, and had to halt construction. We didn’t lay off any staff, but we had to reduce bonuses significantly. The decision came down to either closing the business or selling off assets to continue paying our staff and keep advertising. We chose to keep moving forward, betting on the eventual reopening of Thailand. I sold a large portion of my assets to sustain the company and increased our advertising in countries that were in lockdown. We knew people were stuck at home, bored, and we made sure to stay in touch with them. As a result, when Thailand finally reopened, we saw an influx of inquiries from Europeans who were looking to relocate to Thailand. Our gamble really paid off when others were playing it safe and cutting back.
Business Innovation: What do you enjoy most about your job?
Andrew Stocks: The thing I enjoy most is seeing my customers happy. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing people retire to Thailand through Sunshine International, knowing they will have a great quality of life here. That’s what keeps me motivated and happy.
Business Innovation: You’ve mentioned in a previous interview that you arrived in Thailand with less than £300,000, and now you’re worth several million pounds. Can you share how you accumulated this wealth over the years?
Andrew Stocks: Well, I’m not sure where you got that information, but I’ve worked very hard in my life. I’ve always loved property investments and have chosen to invest back into my own companies and properties rather than risk it in the stock market. A few years ago, I lost a significant amount of money in the stock market, so I switched to investing in what I know best—my businesses and real estate. I’m also very old-fashioned and believe in staying debt-free. But at the end of the day, everything I’ve achieved is through hard work, and I’m proud of that.
Business Innovation: You always seem to be in a good mood. Would you describe yourself as easy-going at all times?
Andrew Stocks: Yes, I am generally happy most of the time. But I wouldn’t say I’m always easy-going. I have a clear vision of what I want, and I’m not easily swayed. People often think I’m easy-going, but in reality, I’m quite determined and focused. I set ambitious goals— often beyond immediate reach—but I persist until I achieve them. No matter what challenges I face, I push forward step by step until I reach my goal. Giving up is not an option for me.
Business Innovation: Are you planning any new projects that haven’t been announced yet?
Andrew Stocks: Yes, we’re planning some new projects, but I can’t reveal any details just yet. Stay tuned!
Business Innovation: Is it true that you want to retire this year?
Andrew Stocks: No, that’s not true. I’m looking at selling my company in the next three to five years, but I won’t be retiring completely. I’ll be reducing my workload a bit, but I still want to be involved with the company. The most important thing is to sell it to the right brand—one that can continue the legacy of Sunshine International and take care of our customers. We’ve made mistakes along the way, but we’re committed to our customers and always strive to make things right.
Business Innovation: You’re opening the Sunshine Prestige Resort & Spa soon. Was it difficult to complete the project on time?
Andrew Stocks: Actually, we’re not opening exactly on time. There were many challenges throughout the construction, but we’re still opening soon. While some companies went bankrupt during the pandemic, we persevered. Even though we faced delays, I’m still proud of the fact that we made it. Our customers have been incredibly patient and understanding, and I’m so grateful for them.
Business Innovation: What motivates you to keep going forward?
Andrew Stocks: My biggest motivator is passion. I love seeing my customers happy, and I’m constantly setting new challenges for myself. I’m driven by the desire to achieve goals that seem out of reach and to create something meaningful. I want to leave the world in a better place than when I came into it.
Business Innovation: Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
Andrew Stocks: Not many, to be honest. I do enjoy traveling, but my biggest passion is my work. Every day I wake up excited to do what I love.
Business Innovation: What do you fear the most?
Andrew Stocks: Honestly, I don’t fear much. The worst thing that can happen is death, and that’s inevitable. If I make a mistake, I learn from it and keep going. There’s not much to be afraid of.
Business Innovation: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Andrew Stocks: I imagine I’ll still be doing something similar—whether it’s continuing to grow my businesses or taking on new projects. Maybe more traveling, meeting new people, and learning along the way.
Business Innovation: What advice would you give to foreigners looking to move to Thailand with the idea of becoming millionaires?
Andrew Stocks: Success isn’t about where you are, it’s about dedication. To succeed anywhere in the world, you need passion, you need to work hard, and you need to love your customers. It takes long hours, a lot of sacrifice, and a commitment to your goals. But if you put in the work, it’s possible.
