Indonesia Earthquake of Magnitude 6.2 Shakes You Up

Indonesia’s Halmahera The National Institute for Seismology (NCS) reported that a 6.2 Richter scale earthquake struck Indonesia on Friday north of Halmahera. The earthquake was felt at 01:32:47 IST, according to the NSC, and it originated at a depth of 99 kilometers. North of Halmahera, Indonesia, “Earthquake of Magnitude:6.2, Occurred on 24-02-2023, 01:32:47 IST, Lat: 3.28 & Long: 128.36, Depth: 99 Km,” NCS tweeted. Thus far, there have been no recorded casualties.

Only two weeks after significant earthquakes struck the area, two earthquakes rattled Turkey’s southernmost Hatay province on Monday, causing at least eight injuries, according to Anadolu Agency, quoting Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay.

One of the earthquakes, with a magnitude of 6.4, occurred in Hatay’s Defense district at around 20:04 PM local time (17:04 GMT), according to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, which cited the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD). Three minutes later, another earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.8, struck the nation, with its epicenter in Hatay’s Samandag province.

As a precaution against the possibility of a rise in sea level that may be as much as 50 centimeters, AFAD issued advisories advising residents to stay away from coastal areas (1.6 feet). Fuat Oktay, vice president of Turkey, urged local residents to avoid damaged structures while officials combed the affected areas. According to the agency, Turkey is still suffering from the grief of losing at least 41,000 people and having another earthquake strike the nation.

Authorities claim that millions of earthquake survivors require humanitarian aid because many of them were left homeless during the winter’s bitter cold. Rescues are currently extremely rare. About two weeks after a devastating earthquake that killed tens of thousands of people, Turkey said it had stopped rescue operations in eight out of ten regions.

According to a representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the recent earthquakes in Turkey have caused the homelessness of 1.5 million people, and the country will need to rebuild 500,000 housing units.
