Hein Schumacher has been appointed as the new CEO of Unilever by the company. He will be replacing Alan Jope from the beginning of July. Investors, including board member and activist shareholder Nelson Peltz, have applauded the decision.
Schumacher, 51, who is presently the CEO of Dutch dairy company FrieslandCampina, returned to Unilever in October last year as a non-executive director.
Prior to working for retailers Royal Ahold NV and H.J. Heinz in the US, Europe, and Asia, he spent more than 20 years with Unilever.
Unilever, one of the largest consumer businesses in the world with more than 400 brands ranging from ice cream to detergent, announced in September that Jope intended to step down at the conclusion of 2023.
Trian Partners’ billionaire activist investor Nelson Peltz said he firmly supports Schumacher as the company’s next CEO and is looking forward to working closely with him to create considerable long-term stakeholder value.
Peltz joined the Unilever board in July after it was made public earlier this year that he had amassed a stake in the business.
